Types of leather, according to their finish.

As analyzed on several occasions leather is one of the most valued materials within the Footwear Industry. Its methods of drying, origin and finishes give them a series of characteristics that make it special for the construction of different types of shoes.


In this opportunity we will talk about the classification of leather according to its finish, which is understood as the final treatment that is given to the product on its surface. 

According to the pigment applied.

En muchos países las condiciones climáticas cambian drásticamente según la época del año, por ende el zapato también debe adaptarse, razón por la cual se recomienda usar para estaciones calidad unos que sean fresco y transpirables, así se evitan hongos y bacterias por sobrecalentamiento.


Mientas que parra climas de tipo frío, se aconseja un zapato que aun manteniendo la transpirabilidad sea capaz de calentar el pie y mantener óptimas temperaturas.

This group originates according to the amount and type of pigment that is applied to it, giving it a different transparency between one and the other. 


Pigments and resins are applied that only partially cover the surface, while providing color and protection to the material. 


Organic pigments, resins and other chemicals that are applied as transparent film without covering the leather, maintaining the characteristics of the skin, including wrinkles, marks, tears, etc. The result is a fine and delicate leather. 


It is a tough and durable skin type although not very soft to the touch, all thanks to the application of inorganic colors that give a uniform look to the entire piece with great appearance.

According to special finishes.


Through a polishing operation achieved with protein binders, the leather acquires a natural appearance, transparent but very shiny.

All Pull up.

It is added oils and waxes that give it a soft and pleasant appearance to the touch. Folding or stretching creates a contrast of colors when lighter tones appear. 


Waxes are also applied, but these will be removed later with a brush, which gives it a look of rustic and vintage finish. 

Patent leather.

The leather is covered with polyurethane components that will be brushed to produce a highly polished material. 



Brush off o florentique.

In this more than one layer of color is obtained thanks to the action of brushing, generally each piece presents a slightly uneven chromatic pattern. 


It is applied with a mechanical process the addition of the film on top of the leather, which is already prefabricated. 


Only waxes are applied to this leather to stand out in a natural and shiny effect. 


Corrected flower leather is used to give the appearance very similar to a full-fledged leather.

According to its plush finish.


Its appearance is achieved with the treatment from the inside out, similar in appearance to the suede thanks to the sanding that is practiced. Turns out to be careful maintenance.


Also known as suede, it is obtained from the underside of the animal’s skin, with its characteristic plush appearance. 

Depending on the type of binders.


Protein binders are mainly used for this type of finish. 


Several types of binders such as acrylics, hot melts, polyurethane or butadienics are used.
