Its origin comes from various animals in which traditionally we find cow, goat, sheep and pig. But these are not the only ones, for more demanding productions we also find exotic skins.

These are less used for the manufacture of footwear, although in recent years they have been gaining more presence. Below we will study the origin of each of these along with its main characteristics.

Crocodile skin.

It is one of the most requested, commonly seen on the world’s walkways and therefore one of the most valued to the point that its cost is calculated per centimeter and not per meter.

Most of this skin comes from species of Africa, Indonesia or Australia; being in a variety of shades of brown, black and white in its natural state, although many tanneries dare to add shades of color that make the chromatic catalog very varied.

For the manufacture of footwear is mostly used the sector of the belly to be the widest and easy to work, it must be taken into account that the cut is symmetrical and clean for both parts of shoes, in addition to the age of the animal that the older its skin will be.

Ostrich skin.

It is a type of elegant, soft and resistant skin that has as particularity a pattern of points in all its extension, which corresponds to the follicles from where the feathers are born.

Thanks to its characteristics to which is added a durability of years without major considerations, without hardening or cracking, this skin is one of the most expensive on the market.

The leg is another part of the ostrich from which the skin is extracted, this with an entirely different pattern that mimics rather the skin of viper, being even more expensive than the rest of the animal, which generally come from Africa, Portugal, Spain and Australia.

"The use of exotic skins in footwear often doubles the value of the final cost"
